Richard is an award winning photographer specializing in Fine Black and White printmaking using traditional and alternative processes, executed in his own darkroom. Each process begins when he captures his own vision of the subject matter on his film of choice using a large format (4 X 5) camera - or in many cases - a professional high resolution digital camera. In either case, his skill in capturing the grand range of available light is based on his experience with the zone system of exposure, and provides the foundation for the custom work that follows, resulting in Fine prints with an extraordinary range of light, detail, and tonal range. Each print is handmade from beginning (image capture) to end (printing, mounting, and matting) using the finest archival papers and other materials. Film captures are enlarged and printed in his traditional darkroom on silver gelatin paper, while digital captures are used for an alternative process that uses a hand-mixed PALLADIUM emulsion that is hand-coated onto specialized paper for making the print. The enlarged negative for this process is produced from the digital camera file using a professional grade wide format digital printer. After exposure of the negative/paper sandwich under ultraviolet light, the print is developed and processed in the darkroom. Richard refers to this combination of digital and traditional printing techniques as a Marriage of Convenience. Palladium prints are well known for their exquisite detail, wide tonal range, and slightly warm overall tonality. Contact Information |
