Artist Statement

As a printmaker and arts educator, I moved to Bend in 2005 when I discovered Central Oregon with its unusual landscape. This landscape has since provided a characteristic quality to my work on all levels. My current work springs from observation of objects in nature, rock ecology, earth mappings, root systems, and color-coding from the high desert. The process of nature’s cycles and systems is very much a part of my creative life.

The focus of my work is to transform the powerful and often chaotic forces of nature into an ordered, functional design – what I call “mapping.” It is a mapping of visions or secrets hidden in desert, sea, forest, rock strata, space and time, and patterns of the universe’s galaxies. The mapping becomes an abstract image over a period of time, using a variety of printmaking and drawing processes. The work becomes a journey through the techniques of relief printing, embossment, chine collé, mixed media, and drawing.

My mixed media prints/drawings produced over the last few years highlight my study and focus of the “mapping” of the Central Oregon landscape. The essence of the landscape mappings are accomplished through three different printmaking processes: collagraph, relief, and engraving/drypoint.

I create my work at Atelier 6000, a professional printmaking studio in Bend, Oregon. As founder of Atelier 6000, my intent is to establish a place for learning and inspiration - a studio-workshop where students learn directly from master artist teachers. I am committed to the advancement of printmaking and book arts as dynamic contemporary art form. Since the doors were opened in 2007 Atelier 6000 has become a creative center for art education where diverse artists and learners are inspired through workshops and share in the interpretive experience of A6’s contemporary presentation gallery.
