From the "Rivers and Creeks" series

Pam Jersey Bird's work originates in observation, yet she paints from imagination. As an intuitive painter she wants to take her work beyond realistic portrayal, from what is perceived to what is experienced.

"I am most happy interpreting the mysterious and intangible qualities of human experience through an expressive abstract visual language. It is my hope that my work will engage the senses of the viewer and provide a new interpretation of the familiar. Although my work is abstract and departs from representational accuracy, I am influenced and inspired by organic forms, textures, and color variations found in nature. Living in a forest near creeks and rivers has greatly influenced my painting in the last ten years. I have been working on a series of water interpretations as well as a series expressing the textures of the forest and I continue to work non-objectively.

I like working in acrylic; its versatility allows me to layer opaque or transparent glazes and strokes of color quickly, as well as explore an assortment of textural applications. I like incorporating what I call " happy accidents" or the randomness of drips, scraping, wiping back, and mixing color on the canvas as a result of over brushing. Not unlike a musical composer, I am continually working to create a harmonious arrangement of visual elements with rhythmic variations and contrasting notes; and providing my audience with a moving emotional experience."

Pam Jersey Bird has had a diverse career in the arts. For many years she was employed as an Art Museum Educator and in that capacity served as director of the museum's education center. She has been an art instructor for community colleges, art centers, public and private high schools, and even taught elementary aged children. Very early in her career she worked in advertising and graphic design. Growing up in New Jersey allowed her to spend a great deal of time in NYC enjoying museums and contemporary art galleries. As an award winning artist, Pam has exhibited widely in California, Washington, and Oregon and been juried in to numerous local and national exhibitions.
