With a traditional oil painting and printmaking background, Barbara
Hudin began experimenting with the encaustic painting technique about
12 years ago, while a student at Pacific NW College of Art. This is an
ancient process, invented by the Greeks to seal the hulls of their ships,
and involves the fusing of resin, wax, and pigment with high heat. Barbara
makes her own paint and applies it in a molten state with bristle brushes.
She uses an iron and propane torch to fuse the paint layer by layer to
a birch or oak panel. Her subjects range from portraiture to the beautiful,
central Oregon landscape.
